At first, every factory generated its own power.
Every city built competing networks.
Every improvement made headlines.
Eventually, something changed. Electricity stopped being the story. It simply became infrastructure.
Could AI be following the same path?

Eventually, performance reaches a level that satisfies most users. Competition moves elsewhere. Personal computers became commodities. Cloud storage became a utility. Internet bandwidth became expected rather than exceptional. Consumers stopped buying specifications, they started buying experiences.
AI may be approaching the same transition.
Intelligence Is Becoming Abundant
Only a few years ago, access to frontier AI was rare.
Today, dozens of models perform at remarkably similar levels across many business tasks.
OpenAI.
Anthropic.
Google.
Meta.
Mistral.
xAI.
Alibaba.
DeepSeek.
Open source models continue improving. Smaller specialised models continue emerging. The supply of intelligence is expanding rapidly.
Economics suggests what usually happens next. Abundance places downward pressure on prices.
The Race Above the Model
As models become increasingly interchangeable, value begins moving elsewhere.
We've explored this shift several times at XcessAI.
Context determines relevance. Memory creates continuity. Loops automate execution. MCP connects AI to enterprise systems.
None of these depend exclusively on one model. The model becomes one component inside a much larger architecture.
Just as businesses rarely care which processor powers their cloud server, they may eventually care less about which model generates each answer. What matters is whether the entire system works.
Utilities Win by Being Invisible
Think about electricity. Nobody opens an app to choose today's electricity provider before turning on the lights. The infrastructure simply works.
The same principle applies to cloud computing. Most businesses don't know which physical server runs their applications. Nor do they need to.
The infrastructure disappears behind the experience. The greatest compliment a utility receives is that nobody notices it.
AI may ultimately follow the same path.
The Enterprise Perspective
This shift is already visible inside organisations.
Early AI projects focused on experimenting with different models. Today, conversations increasingly revolve around different questions.
Can we integrate it securely?
Can we control costs?
Can we audit decisions?
Can it connect to our internal systems?
Can employees actually use it?
These are infrastructure questions. Not model questions.
As AI becomes embedded across organisations, operational reliability becomes more valuable than marginal improvements in benchmark performance.
The New Competitive Battlefield
If intelligence becomes abundant, where does competitive advantage move?
Possibly toward:
proprietary enterprise data
workflow integration
governance
trust
security
orchestration
user experience
These are remarkably similar to the forces that shaped previous technology platforms.
Very few companies succeeded simply because they owned better infrastructure. Most succeeded because they built better ecosystems on top of it.
Does This Mean Models No Longer Matter?
Not at all.
Frontier research will remain enormously important. Breakthroughs will continue. New capabilities will emerge. The frontier always matters.
The question is where most economic value eventually accumulates. History suggests it rarely remains at the infrastructure layer forever.
Computing created Microsoft. The internet created Google. Smartphones created Apple. Cloud computing created Amazon Web Services.
Perhaps AI's largest winners will not simply build intelligence. They will build everything that surrounds it.
The Next Utility
There is another interesting consequence. Utilities are expected to be available everywhere.
Reliable. Affordable. Predictable.
As AI costs continue falling, intelligence could become an assumption rather than a purchasing decision.
Applications won't advertise that they "use AI." They will simply work better.
The same way few products advertise that they use electricity.
Closing Thoughts
The AI industry is still moving at extraordinary speed.
New models will continue to break records. Benchmarks will continue making headlines. But the bigger transformation may be happening more quietly.
Intelligence is becoming easier to access. Cheaper to deploy. More deeply integrated into the software we already use.
Eventually, the most successful AI may be the AI we barely notice, because it became part of the infrastructure that powers everything else.
If that happens, the future of AI won't be measured by which model wins. It will be measured by how completely intelligence disappears into the background of everyday work.
